Biography:

This is Kevin O’Brien’s 3rd year at Franklin Academy and he couldn’t be more excited to be a part of such a creative, collaborative and empathetic community. He comes to Franklin from the Bay Area where he taught special education for over 12 years and specialized in the development of  Executive Functioning,  Social Emotional Learning, and Reading Comprehension skills.

While working on his graduate degree, Kevin was selected among a group of educators to participate in a teaching fellowship program in Cape Town, South Africa. He worked collaboratively with students and educators from the Langa Township to develop social emotional learning curriculum and STEM lesson plans at the Langa LEAP School of Math and Science.  When not in the classroom, Kevin enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys William and Wesley, tromping the coast and  forests of the Eastern Woodlands looking for their next adventure. Kevin is also an avid record collector, recording musician and skateboard enthusiast. It is his passion to serve the community and help impact the lives of young people in meaningful ways.

What is your favorite Franklin tradition and why? GFO—Watching the students take an abstract idea and turn it into a tangible, playable hole is amazing. It showcases all of the work they put into the skills of effective communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
What is your favorite thing about working with these students? The laughter. These kids have excellent sense of humor and love the organic small talk that occurs during social time, in between classes, dining hall, etc.
What is something fun/quirky people should know about you? I recorded with a Grammy award-winning reggae singer.
The most important quality a teacher applying to Franklin Academy should have is… Empathy
If I could have dinner with anyone (dead or alive), I would choose… Joseph Campbell
Something I love about Franklin Academy is… Sense of community
If I could shadow a Franklin alum for the day, what would I hope to learn? How did this person generalize the social and executive functioning skills learned at Franklin in the “real world.”
