Annual Calendar and Daily Schedule
Our regular school year runs from early September until early June. We divide this school year into five terms or "quints," each of which is five weeks in length. There are also 2 two-week intersessions during the first half of December and April when our students set aside their regular classes to take a high interest mini-course. Going beyond the quints and intersessions, we supplement our regular program with an extensive New England college tour during the mid-October holiday, special travel options during February and April vacations, international travel/study during the first half of June, and our Summer Sojourn program during the month of July.
Since life in a boarding school is a "full immersion" experience, we carefully organize the daily schedule to help students and teachers pace themselves. Classes are held Monday through early afternoon on Saturday, starting at approximately 9 am each day. Classes are typically 50 to 60 minutes in length, and one hour is set aside for lunch. There is ample time everyday for recreation and physical fitness, rest and relaxation, and socializing with friends, as well as excursions away from campus on the weekend. After the evening meal (except on Saturday), students return to their dormitories for a team meeting, a residential lesson, study hour, and some free time with classmates before turning in for the night. Of course, at every step throughout each day, teachers are there to supervise, support, and instruct our students.
The yearly calendar and the daily schedule provides a predictable structure that has been well-established at Franklin Academy. However, there are also inevitable changes and transitions throughout the year that we carefully preview with our students, especially as special occasions, disruptive weather conditions, or school vacations necessitate a change in our routines.
