East Haddam and Deep River, Connecticut – Franklin Academy and A Little Compassion, Inc. (ALC) announce the transition of ALC’s Gatherings and Acceptance, Inclusion & Outreach (AI&O) programs to Franklin Academy’s Center for Neurodiversity. This acquisition, which took effect at the beginning of December, ensures that programs which have served the local neurodiverse community continue. It also enables the Center for Neurodiversity to offer more regional and community-oriented programming.
“At the Center, we recognized the same truth that A Little Compassion has always championed. People need spaces where they feel safe and understood,” said Dr. Morris Wood, Head of School at Franklin Academy. “It has been incredibly heartening to know that the social gatherings that mean so much to so many will continue.”
Franklin Academy, established in 2002, began its Center for Neurodiversity in January 2025. This transition aligns with the Center’s mission of helping neurodivergent people and their allies find community. ALC, founded by Jane Moen in conjunction with The Nest Coffee House in Deep River, held its first Gathering in 2018. Since then, thousands of people have benefitted from events ranging from hikes and Open Mic nights to Conversations & Connections for parents and allies. As ALC closes its doors, its much loved programs will continue to benefit the neurodiverse community under the leadership of the Center for Neurodiversity.
“ALC’s Gatherings and AI&O programs are finding an enduring, sustainable home at the Center for Neurodiversity,” shared Sarah Spear, Interim Executive Director at A Little Compassion. “I am grateful for Franklin Academy’s partnership that made this possible.”
