Franklin Academy Student Qualifies for National Geography Bee Championship

East Haddam, Connecticut — Franklin Academy Junior Milan Bonilla-Cruz has earned a remarkable academic distinction, qualifying for the 2026 National Geography Bee Championship—a prestigious national competition that draws top student geographers from across the country.

Hosted by the National Geography Bee, the inaugural championship will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Sheraton Commander Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, located on the campus of Harvard University. Milan will compete alongside dozens of high-achieving students selected from a pool of thousands nationwide.

Milan secured his place in the national competition after emerging as Franklin Academy’s school champion in the program’s first year of participation. His qualification represents not only individual excellence, but also a meaningful milestone for the school’s academic programming. “This is our first year offering the National Geography Bee to students at our school, and I am beyond thrilled that our school champion has qualified for the National Finals,” said Franklin Academy’s Humanities Department Chair, Amy Paxon. “I am excited to go to Harvard in May with a group of other students there to support him!”

The National Geography Bee challenges students to demonstrate a deep understanding of world geography, cultural knowledge, and global awareness – skills that align closely with Franklin Academy’s commitment to rigorous, engaging academics delivered in meaningful ways. Milan’s achievement reflects his curiosity, dedication, and passion for learning, as well as the strength of Franklin Academy’s academic environment. As he prepares for the national stage, he carries with him the pride and support of the entire school community. With the championship approaching, Milan will join some of the most talented young scholars in the country for a day of competition, connection, and celebration of knowledge on one of the nation’s most iconic academic campuses.

Franklin Academy congratulates Milan on this outstanding accomplishment and looks forward to cheering him on in May.
