Franklin Academy Wins in Best of Connecticut Contest

East Haddam, Conn. — Franklin Academy has been named Connecticut’s Best Private School in the statewide Best of Connecticut Awards, earning the distinction through a public vote of families, students, alumni, educators, and community members across the state.

After first being recognized as the top private school in Middlesex County, Franklin Academy advanced to the statewide competition, where it received the highest number of votes among private schools across Connecticut.

Unlike many school rankings that rely on statistical formulas, institutional reputation, or historical prestige, the Best of Connecticut Awards are determined entirely by public vote, making the recognition a direct reflection of the experiences and confidence of the people who know Franklin Academy best. According to Dr. Alexander Morris-Wood, the Head of School “This award reflects something incredibly authentic…it reflects the lived experiences of the people who have walked our halls, partnered with our faculty, watched their children grow, or witnessed firsthand what makes Franklin Academy special.”

Kinsley Rausch-Dudzic, Dean of Advancement and Alumni Relations added “This award is especially meaningful because it comes directly from our community. It represents the voices of families who have entrusted us with their children, students who have found a place where they belong, alumni whose lives have been transformed, and educators who believe deeply in our mission.”

Connecticut is home to more than 90 independent schools and is widely recognized as one of the nation’s premier states for private education. Its independent schools include some of the country’s most respected educational institutions, making Franklin Academy’s recognition as Connecticut’s Best Private School especially meaningful. Franklin Academy was honored to be recognized alongside an outstanding group of finalists, including Our Lady of Mercy, Notre Dame Prep, Marvelwood School, School Days, and St. Bernard School.

Founded to serve high school students who learn differently, Franklin Academy has built its reputation as a nationally recognized leader in neurodivergent education, on the belief that educational excellence begins with understanding how students learn. The school’s individualized approach combines rigorous academics with executive functioning instruction, social development, college and career preparation, and a community rooted in belonging.

“This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects a vision that began nearly 25 years ago,” said Cynthia Pope, Dean of Enrollment and one of Franklin Academy’s founders. “We envisioned a school where neurodivergent students could receive an exceptional college-preparatory education while being understood, supported, and empowered to thrive. Being named Connecticut’s Best Private School affirms that vision and reflects the dedication of our faculty and staff, the trust of our families, and the extraordinary students who inspire us every day.”

Beyond recognizing Franklin Academy’s achievements, the award reflects a broader shift in how neurodivergent education is viewed across Connecticut and beyond. By focusing on students’ strengths, fostering meaningful relationships, and providing individualized support alongside high expectations, Franklin Academy continues to demonstrate that neurodivergent students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.

“Our students challenge perceptions every day,” added Dr. Morris-Wood. “They remind us that success looks different for every learner and that when students are truly understood, challenged, and empowered, extraordinary outcomes are possible. We are deeply grateful to everyone who voted and to the families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends who continue to champion our mission. This honor belongs to our entire Franklin Academy community.”
