ADHD Students Excel at Franklin Academy

High School for ADHD Students

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. More than two-thirds of people with ADHD have at least one other co-existing condition so it is not surprising many students at Franklin Academy have been identified with ADHD in addition to one or more of the following:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder – Level 1
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Nonverbal Learning Disability

Unique Challenges for ADHD Students

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is very much a part of our school language here at Franklin Academy. We work with students to help them understand their strengths and challenges, promoting self-awareness and self-reliance. Review of individual diagnoses is an important part of the conversation. These discussions set the stage for personal growth. Since Franklin Academy’s founding in 2001, our school’s competency-based curriculum makes it possible for bright students identified with co-occurring ADHD to pursue collegiate goals, professional aspirations, and satisfying lives filled with meaningful relationships.

ADHD symptoms can affect daily functioning as well as development. Individuals may miss details, make careless mistakes, have problems sustaining attention on tasks or in communication, be unable to organize tasks and thoughts, lose things, and be easily distracted. ADHD symptoms can impact all aspects of a person’s life, including the building of relationships.
