Franklin Academy is a friendly community. Perhaps it is our tradition of first name salutations between students and faculty that sets the tone. We also hire very personable teachers. Of course, our students are kind and curious and eager to welcome newcomers to campus. The relatively small size of our Franklin family allows each of us to know everyone. We spend a lot of time at the beginning of a new school year focusing on activities that build rapport and create a sense of belonging. One important tradition is Amy Bigelow’s introduction of every teacher and student during community meeting. She presents first and last names, hometown and state. Another “icebreaker” is our Speed Friending event. Rapid-fire conversations with twelve classmates and adults break down barriers. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that Franklin students frequently look into the window of the Headmaster’s office to say good morning.
