The Challenge of Sunday College Visits

Sunday can be a challenging day to schedule during a college tour. So far, I know only of Princeton University offering campus tours on this day of rest and relaxation. Since Josh, James, and I have been many times to Bennington College, we decided to conduct a self-guided tour of this quiet campus where students are on break during the long Columbus Day weekend. Bennington's admissions staff left us packets of information about the school on the porch of their building, and I provided a brief compare and contrast of Hampshire (1400 students), Marlboro (200 students), and Bennington (700 students). We reviewed their distinctive programs and approaches to education, talked about the types of student who would do well at these schools, and analyzed the acceptance rates. Then, we hiked the campus and discovered that many of the buildings were wide open for our inspection. By late morning we were back on the road, crossing into New York and on our way to Cooperstown where we visited the Baseball Hall of Fame after lunch and then made our way to Oneonta. Tomorrow's destinations include Hartwick College in the morning and Binghamton University in the afternoon.
