Big-Time College Experience

Rochester is 360 miles northwest of East Haddam – the furthest destination on this college tour.  Yesterday, we turned back east and headed to Syracuse University, alma mater of Sara Giroux, our Team D Learning Specialist.  Syracuse is another large university with 15,000 undergraduates and 7,000 graduates, but this was our first chance to experience a large urban campus that occupies 721 acres on University Hill in the heart of a city of 300,000.  The campus is filled with handsome buildings reflecting very eclectic architectural styles, including the only domed football stadium in the Northeast.  Otto the Orange is the school mascot, and the color orange is splashed everywhere.  Of course, there is an incredible range of academic majors and minors, and Syracuse offers one of “the oldest and most respected study abroad programs” with seven centers across the world.  Franklin Academy students considering Syracuse University should know in advance that this is a quintessential, big-time, NCAA Division I college experience.  One last thing – Syracuse averages 100 inches of snow each winter.
