This past Sunday seven members of the Franklin Academy community joined 1,300 other runners for West Hartford’s Blue Back Square 5K Mitten Run to support The Town that Cares Fund.  Here is the report from Amy Bigelow.

Our two fastest runners were Sam Payne (Team C) and Parker Lake (Team D), taking advantage of the rigorous training in their Winter Sports Intersession class. This was Parker’s first race with Franklin and Sam’s second. Sam cut an impressive 3 minutes and 49 seconds off of his best time. Also braving the course in the pouring rain and 38 degree temperatures were Mark Hally (Team C) and Brinkley Blum (Team B), who were returning for their second year at the Mitten Run. Each met their personal goals during the race. Indeed, Brinkley took 22 seconds off her best time. Congratulations are also extended to Jacob Nelson (Team C), who was running his first race with Franklin. Our student runners were accompanied by veteran harriers Amy Bigelow (Team D Mathematics Instructor) and Byron Crozier (College Counselor). We ended our chilly, wet day with enthusiastic cheering as Byron was called up to the stage to accept his prize for placing third in his division. Although some of our race participants have run cross country at their previous schools, all agreed this was the most challenging weather they had ever raced in.

Due to the frigid, wet conditions, photo opportunities were minimal, but we were able to capture the Franklin runners during warm ups in a parking garage adjacent to the starting line and during a well-deserved warm meal after the race.
