We enjoyed a very successful opening of our seventeenth school year. Now, the transition has begun as students adjust to being away from home. First, we focus on rapport-building and belonging. Our most important goal is to create a safe, supportive, and positive school community where all can live and learn together. Next, students and teachers are writing team charters, reviewing the code of conduct, and discussing mutual expectations. This first five-week term is also our “assessment” quint. Students acclimate to classes and learn “how to be a student.” Teachers evaluate skills. Additionally, they make sure that class placements are appropriate. There is a clear emphasis on determining each student’s level of executive functioning, resulting in plans and systems to strengthen one’s ability to manage life at both school and home. Best of all, however, is the enthusiastic bonding among new and returning students.
