Franklin Academy recognizes that adolescence
is a dynamic developmental phase during which
children become young adults. It is a journey
of great exploration and growth requiring support
as well as freedom, acceptance as well as challenge.
Students with nonverbal learning differences move
through this developmental stage with a unique
perspective that requires us to understand their
individual learning assets and deficits in addition
to typical adolescent issues.
Franklin Academy provides a strong foundation
and structure that permits each student to take
the appropriate risks necessary for learning and
growth. Emotional and physical safety is the cornerstone
of our community. We recognize that for students
with nonverbal learning differences, the risk
of failure often displaces the willingness to
learn. The four essential components of a Franklin
Academy education
character, spirit, body, and mind
empower students with nonverbal learning
differences to engage in the learning process
and pursue productive lives.
Our character is revealed by how we behave toward
ourselves, toward those around us, and toward
the outside world. At Franklin Academy, students
are encouraged to develop a personal code of ethics
centered on responsibility, integrity, compassion,
and service to others. Living these virtues builds
self-respect, enhances interpersonal relations,
and strengthens the community.
Franklin values personal spiritual growth and
diversity of thought and belief. We strive to
create an environment where all members of our
community may ask questions to explore the meaning
and purpose of our individual and collective lives.
These opportunities for individual and community
reflection foster a deeper understanding of spirituality.
Adolescence is a period of tremendous physical
change that can be exciting and at times overwhelming.
As students come to terms with these changes,
they need to take responsibility for the care
of their bodies. Our comprehensive wellness curriculum
and sensory integration program is designed to
help students make healthy decisions. In addition,
students are required to explore a variety of
physical activities and life sports to achieve
greater fitness, coordination, health, and self-esteem.
The Academy celebrates intellectual curiosity
as part of the development of the mind. Our goal
is that each member of the Franklin community
becomes a self-directed, life-long learner. The
carefully crafted curriculum is developed to motivate
and challenge students as they prepare for college
or career. The academic program, combined with
tutorial instruction, enables students to understand
their unique learning styles and develop the tools
to address weaknesses while enhancing strengths.
Franklin Academy prepares its students to embrace
the challenges of life with creativity and confidence.
