First Day in Cuba

Here is the next installment of Josh Weissbach’s Cuban travelogue.

We have just completed our first half day in Havana and what a success!  We made it through immigration and customs at Jose Marti International Airport without any issues.  Once we met Manuel and Richard, our two tour guides for the entirety of our time in Cuba, we went straight to la Plaza de la Revolucion. You can see the group pictured above in front of the large mural of Che Guevara with his famous tag line that he included in every letter to Fidel, "Always until victory.”  From there we went to the Hotel Kohly, checked in to our rooms, changed money, and then made our way to Havana Vieja.  On our drive we travelled along the Malecon (the Seafront) and looked out at the Atlantic Ocean. Upon arrival in Havana Vieja, we spent some time in la Plaza de la Catedral and then went out for dinner at La Moneda Cubana.  Students were able to pick from chicken, pork, shredded beaf, or lobster for their main course.  It was quite a first meal in Havana.  After dinner, we made our way to La Fortaleza, where every night at 9 pm the closing of the fortress gates is performed. This nightly tradition started in 1764.
