Day Four – Havana
I just received this update from Josh Weissbach in Cuba.
Our last 24 hours in Havana have been centered on community and education. Last evening our group visited MURALEANDO, which is an art center focused on the re-beautification of its local neighborhood and providing a space for young children and teenagers to learn about the visual arts and music. Our students were treated to a performance by the MURALEANDO band, which is led by some of its older teachers and members, and they were excited to dance to this classic Cuban music.
This morning our first stop was at the University of Havana. Students were given a tour of the grounds and Cuba’s free education system was discussed in depth. After this, Franklin made its way to Havana Vieja and had a walking tour of some of the most well known squares throughout the neighborhood. There was also time to shop for souvenirs and relax amongst the beautiful architecture. Sam and Jimmy took advantage of this freedom in our schedule, briefly performing with a street musician. We ate lunch next to the ferry terminal in Old Havana, which connects locals to the other side of the bay. The amazing cuisine that we have been experiencing continued as students ate shrimp, croquettes, stuffed peppers, filet mignon, and ice cream with a brownie.
This afternoon we visited a day care center located in a church that supported children from disadvantaged families. Franklin students enjoyed spending time with these young Cuban kids. A large collection of gifts that were donated by the Franklin Academy community was given to this day care and the kids especially enjoyed receiving a large contribution of chocolate. We ended the afternoon with a performance by the Angeles of the Future, which is a troupe of young acrobats based in a community center in the same neighborhood as our hotel.
Tonight we enjoyed our last dinner in Havana, and tomorrow we make our way east to Cienfuegos, which is located along Caribbean waters on the southern coast of Cuba.
