Franklin Academy provides students with nonverbal learning differences the academic and social skills to become life-long learners, to pursue college and career goals, and to enjoy fulfilling lives. This is our mission.

Our educational model is built upon this specific mission, and our program appeals to students who possess similar strengths, share common interests, and face comparable challenges. We have created a school community where everyone feels safe, connected, and understood. We have designed a school day and a year-round calendar to allow ample time for work and sufficient time for rest. We emphasize small classes, a low student-teacher ratio, teaching teams to serve a specific group of students, and residential supervision that is handled by every teacher and administrator. The curriculum addresses students with an auditory learning style preference and focuses on the acquisition of vital social and academic skills to prepare students for college work and lifelong learning. The physical environment of our compact campus, the single occupancy dorm rooms, and family-style dining provide a comfortable, home-away-from-home living and learning experience for our students. It is our expectation that students will remain at Franklin Academy until graduation and gain entrance to an appropriate college or university.

We are always interested in finding educators who share our passion for serving students with special needs. We value creativity and collaboration, abundant energy and high professional standards, compassion and commitment, flexibility, initiative, and a good sense of humor. We seek veterans, young professionals, and teaching couples.

Of course, we are looking for applicants with solid preparation in a particular subject area. Previous work with this population of students in not a pre-requisite for employment, but some experience is certainly an advantage as is course work or experiences in special education.

Previous experience in a boarding school is also not a pre-requisite for a position at Franklin Academy. However, every teacher is expected to enter into the full life of this "round-the-clock" community. In some ways, Franklin Academy resembles a small village where everyone knows each other exceedingly well. We live and learn together. We care for each other, and we share so many experiences. We are more than colleagues. We are neighbors and soon become friends.

Salaries are competitive with those offered in boarding schools across New England. We provide a group health plan with 75% of the monthly premium funded by the school and 25% funded by the employee. Teachers (and their families) are accommodated in a range of on-campus and off-campus homes and apartments, and the school also pays for utility costs. During the 2005-06 school year, full-time teachers who have worked at Franklin Academy for at least one year will begin participating in the school's retirement plan.

If interested in exploring career opportunities at Franklin Academy, please fill out the employment application which you can download from this section of the website and send it with a cover letter, resume, and transcripts to Frederick Weissbach, Franklin Academy, 106 River Road, East Haddam, CT 06423. You can also email information to fred@fa-ct.org. Applicants who possess the qualifications that seem to best meet our needs will be invited to Franklin Academy for day-long interviews. Typically, the school interviews teaching candidates during the months of March and April. It is our hope to have all positions filled for the coming school year by the beginning of May.

Since Franklin Academy continues to grow in enrollment, we anticipate filling the following new full-time positions for 2006-07: 4th Learning Specialist, 4th Counselor, an additional Science and Mathematics Teacher, an additional Language and Arts Teacher, and a 3rd Nurse.

Franklin Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin in its educational programs, admission and hiring policies, or any of its school activities.
